Hey Life released their latest track “Here’s The Thing About Lilith” on Monday. I had the opportunity to ask them a few questions about Lilith and their music.
Julien: lead vocals
Florian: guitar, back vocals
JC: guitar, back vocals
Antoine: bass, back vocals
How did you all meet?
Most of us met in high school where we already played music together. We met Julien at a local gig and we created HEY LIFE together a few months after.
How did you come up with the name Hey Life?
We wanted a name that made sense with the positive message we want to convey. JC randomly heard these two words in the lyrics of “Live Slow, Die Old” by Lower Than Atlantis and we quickly adopted them.
Lilith (in Judeo-Roman religion) is the destroyer of man and devourer of children, did you know of this significance? If yes how did it impact your introduction of her?
We wanted to find something to illustrate the idea of human superficiality: here by describing a woman hiding a dark and dangerous personality behind her beauty. Since we quickly thought about the succubus concept, we came up with “Lilith” because we found out that she’s their designated queen (in addition to her many other titles which we didn’t really consider for this song).
What more can you tell us about your Lilith?
Our Lilith is a beautiful, glamorous and mysterious girl. She’s roaming around the Parisian streets, catching the eyes of everyone that crosses her path. However, her enchanting aura seems to hide more mysteries… We’ll let you discover more about her in the music video! *wink*
It was a pleasure to work with our actress Manon, we really liked her performance as Lilith and we hope you’ll appreciate it as well!
You have been promoting your new single Here’s the Thing About Lilith a lot, what comes next for you after its release?
This song is the first single of our debut EP “Masquerade”, coming on December 7th.
You guys are from Paris, I am assuming you all speak French, what made you decide to write/sing in English?
English is the language used by our influences, and we think that it fits better our musical genre. Also we want to share our music with people beyond our home country.
How would you describe your music to someone listening for the first time?
We’d say it’s a mix of groove-infused rock and catchy melodies composed with the idea of playing them live.
What bands have you been influenced by?
Among our influences, the main one is the alternative British wave carried out by bands such as Don Broco, Bring Me The Horizon or Lower Than Atlantis.
What has been your best live show experience?
A month ago, we opened in Paris for the Italian band Halflives: we didn’t expect the audience to be so responsive to our music! Everybody danced and it was a very fun and rewarding moment of sharing.
